Professor (Dr) Syed Ali Irfan Naqvi (Urdu: سید علی عرفان نقوی; Born 28 February 1965) also known as Arshi Naqvi, is a writer, poet, scholar, critic, and educationist. After completing his primary and higher education in Calcutta, he found work as an Associate Professor in the Department of Urdu at Kidderpore College, Kolkata in 1998 and also serves as the Head of the department there.[1] He has also been attached with the Department of Urdu at the University of Calcutta as a Guest Lecturer since 2012. Beside these, Naqvi has also acted as an Honourable Member of the West Bengal School Service Commission (S.R.) since 2012.[2] He is the first Muslim professor of Urdu to be appointed as such. He is also an Honourable Member of the Board of Studies (UG) at the University of Calcutta and is a Life Member of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata.

Personal
Arshi Naqvi was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. His father is Syed Zamin Hossain Naqvi and his mother is Hasan Bandi. He is married to Abbas Saiyada who is a daughter of the late Syed Abbas Husain Zangipuri, a renowned Marsiakhan of Banaras. Arshi Naqvi lives with his wife and two sons in Kolkata.

Naqvi is one of the Honarable Members the West Bengal School Service Commission (S.R.) and the first Muslim professor of Urdu appointed to the Commission. He is also one of the members of Studies (U.G.) in University of Calcutta and the life member of the Asiatic Society, Kolkata.
Education
He choose Urdu as his subject and completed his graduation (B.A.) at Maulana Azad College in 1985. He then obtained his MA and PhD from the University of Calcutta in 1985 and 1988, respectively.

Success of Naqvi's Career
In 1998, he started working as a lecturer at Kidderpore College. His first edited book was published in 2006, entitled Wahshat Shanasi from the Department of Urdu, Kidderpore College. Wahshat Kalkatvi was a renowned Urdu poet of Bengal, also known as Ghalib E Sani. His Second book was Wahshat Kalkatvi : Mushaheer-e-Adab ki Nazron mein. He also edited the book entitled Rubaiyat E Mir Taqi Mir in 2018. He published his thesis, titled Wahshat Kalkatvi: Hayat aur Karname as well in 2012. This is the first thesis awarded at University of Calcutta on the subject.
He organised a two-day national seminar at the Department of Urdu, Kidderpore College, sponsored by the West Bengal Urdu Academy in 2018.
He attended and delivered lectures and presented his papers at different literary programs and seminars in Kolkata. He was awarded as "Maulvi Abdul Haq Award 2017" in 2019 from The West Bengal Urdu Academy.
